  • PASSEPORT & ADMINISTRATIVE DOCUMENTS
    . EU members: valid passport or identity card

    . Other nationalities: consult the Portuguese consulate/Embassy of your country of origin.
    . We advise you to also bring a photocopy of your original documents and keep them with you during your trip separate to the original ones.

  • HEALTH INFORMATION
    No vaccine is required, but it is recommended to be up to date with all universal vaccinations: diphtheria, tetanus, polio.
    . Malaria is absent in mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.
    . Other risks: If, as in all European countries, the traveller is not exposed to "exotic" health risks, the behavioural or environmental risks may be the same as elsewhere.
    . Practical info: Health infrastructure is, of course, satisfactory everywhere, but the cost of care in some private facilities requires checking all the clauses of the insurance contract before departure. 

    Preparing your return journey :
    . It is your responsibility to check the conditions of return to your country of origin (negative PCR test, quarantine, etc.).
    . If you need to present a negative PCR test to return to your country, it is possible to carry out this test in Funchal (see here the list of health centers)
    . The antigen test (+/- 30 € per person) or the PCR test (between 90 € and 100 € per person). It is necessary to take an appointment by email few days in advance. The results are obtained within a minimum of  30 minutes for the antigen and 24 hours for the PCR (by email).

    . In a general way, it is your responsibility to check with the competent authorities in your country of residence what the rules are for leaving and returning home :

  • INSURANCE
    . As you are travelling abroad, it is your responsibility to have an adequate valid travel insurance
    . Bring a copy of it, and please forward us all information (company name, contract number, and international 7/7 assistance contact)

  • WEATHER
    . Madeira, also known as the "island of eternal spring", enjoys pleasant temperatures all year round. A temperate climate an average of 21°C in the summer and 16°C in the winter.
    . During the winter months (from December to March) there can be fog, rain and even snow on the peaks. The south of the island has a drier and sunnier climate. The north coast is the wettest part of the island and the greenest.
    . The average monthly seawater temperature is relatively high and varies regularly throughout the year from about 17°C to about 22°C in August and September. The seawater temperature in the region rarely drop below 15° and rarely exceeds 25°.

  • ELECTRICITY

  • MOBILE PHONE & INTERNET
    . For the UE members: since June 2017, a European traveler with a cell package in his home country can use his mobile phone at national rate in the 27 countries of the European Union without fear of having his bill skyrocket. However, limits are set by operators to avoid any excess use. The agreement signed between the EU and its telephone operators also concerns the consumption of 3G or 4G internet data, the volume of which can be used at no extra cost depending on the price of the national package (please inquire).
    . For other nationalities, please contact your operator before leaving.
    . Alternatively, you can buy a sim card upon your arrival in Madeira to get on the local network. 

  • MONEY MATTERS – TIPPING – CLOSING TIME 
    .  Madeira is part of the Portugal and therefore part of the €uros zone.
    . ATM are available all over the island and card is accepted in most shops and hotels.
    . Tipping is not included in the restaurants / bars. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service.
    . Shops are open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Some shopping malls are open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
