Crossing Madeira

To help preserve Madeira's trails, a new hiking fee system is being introduced for non-resident hikers. From October 28, 2024, fees will apply to seven of the island's most popular trails. From January 1, 2025, all PR trails (Recommended Routes) will be chargeable.

WEATHER

Madeira, also known as the "island of eternal spring", enjoys pleasant temperatures all year round. A temperate climate an average of 21°C in the summer and 16°C in the winter. During the winter months (from December to March) there can be fog, rain and even snow on the peaks. The south of the island has a drier and sunnier climate. The north coast is the wettest part of the island and the greenest. The average monthly seawater temperature is relatively high and varies regularly throughout the year from about 17°C to about 22°C in August and September. The seawater temperature in the region rarely drop below 15° and rarely exceeds 25°. We recommend the weather websites: http://www.meteociel.fr/ + name of the town

ELECTRICITY

Europe is on voltage: 220-240V. Check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items here.

MOBILE PHONE & INTERNET

Please check that your mobile/cell plan allows for calls and messages abroad. A good option is to buy a "country SIM card" in a phone shop/newsagent. It will cost you around 10-15€ and will allow you to call local phone numbers with internet access.

MONEY MATTERS & CLOSING HOURS

The currency is the €uro. Please ensure to have some cash with you as there aren't always ATM machines in small villages. Tips are always included (different than Canada and USA) but always appreciated. Most shops are closed on Sundays. Most supermarkets are usually open on Sundays until midday.
