Welcome to Normandy

Normandy, a region in the north of France, is a place where history and culture come to life in a stunning natural setting. Famous for its role in World War II, charming coastal towns, and mouthwatering cuisine, Normandy has something for everyone.

A Brief History

Normandy’s history stretches back to ancient times, but it gained significant prominence in the early Middle Ages. The name "Normandy" comes from the Norsemen (or Vikings), who settled there in the 9th and 10th centuries.

In 1066, the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror, famously invaded England, becoming its king after the Battle of Hastings. This event profoundly altered the English language and culture. Fast forward to World War II, and Normandy again found itself in the global spotlight. The D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. The beaches such as Omaha & Utah are now solemn memorials to the bravery of the Allied forces.

Cultural Riches

Normandy’s culture is a vibrant mix of its historical influences and local traditions. The architecture is particularly noteworthy, with the region boasting stunning examples of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most iconic landmarks. This medieval abbey perched on a rocky island is an architectural marvel and a pilgrimage site.

Another cultural gem is the Bayeux Tapestry. This 70-metre-long embroidered cloth depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in intricate detail. It’s housed in the town of Bayeux, where visitors can immerse themselves in this epic tale.

Deauville and Trouville are twin coastal towns that encapsulate the elegance and charm for which Normandy is renowned. Deauville is famous for its chic marinas, luxury hotels, and the glamorous Deauville American Film Festival held annually in September. The town's expansive sandy beach, iconic wooden boardwalk, and sophisticated casino attract tourists and celebrities alike. Just across the river Touques lies Trouville-sur-Mer, Deauville’s more relaxed sister. Less glitzy, Trouville boasts a beautiful beach, a bustling fish market, and quaint seaside restaurants. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with its picturesque 19th-century villas, makes it a favorite among artists and writers. Both towns offer a delightful blend of relaxation and cultural richness, making them essential stops on any Normandy itinerary.
