Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Lisbon

Arrival in Lisbon. Optional transfer to the hotel in the centre of Lisbon. A free day to visit the beautiful capital of Portugal, once the centre of a large maritime empire from Brazil to Japan. Enjoy the narrow streets and alleyways, the small squares and belvederes and stroll through the historical quarters of Mouraria, Alfama and Chiado.

Day 2 - From Lisbon Vila Nova De Milfontes

algarve portugal toursPrivate transfer (2h30) from Lisbon to Vila Nova de Milfontes. Vila Nova de Milfontes is a beautiful white-washed town nestled between the Mira river estuary and the ocean.  Your first port of call along the coast offering incredible sunsets. Enjoy a stroll by the sea and admire the sand dunes and long stretches of sandy beach.

.Have an extra night in Lisbon or Faro, in order to be able to have the 2h30 transfer to Vila Nova de Milfontes in the morning, or early afternoon

Day 3 - Porto Covo to Vila Nova de Milfontes

Transfer to Porto Covo (30 min), a small white-washed fishing village. Hike along the beautiful alentejana coast passing through the fortress of Pessegueiro , the amazing « sand dune » in Malhao, pine forests and picture postcard beaches.

Day 4 - Vila Nova de Milfontes to Almograve

The trail heads south from Vila Nova de Milfontes to Almograve, close to the Atlantic Ocean. You cross the Mira estuary on a traditional boat and then continue onwards following the cliffs, beaches and mimosa forests towards the small village of Almograve.

Day 5 - Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar

Your transfer will take you to the suberp Almograve beach, the start of your walk.  A wild and colourful coastline towards Zambujeira do Mar, a beautiful fishing village with the traditional white-washed houses with a blue stripe, a reminder of the Oceans presence and typical to Southern Portugal.

Day 6 - Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe

walking in portugalThis section of the walk lies between the two regions of Alentejo and the Algarve. The view from the cliffs down towards the mouth of the river Odeceixe with its white wavy sand banks and turquoise water is a real highlight of the walk. At the end of the walk, you can go to the beautiful Odeceixe beach.

Day 7 - Amoreira beach and Aljezur

Transfer (30 min) to Rogil. The walk starts along a « levada », an irrigation channel. The water from the Levada is used in part for agricultural purposes. This particular region is famous for sweet potato, cereal and vines. A walk through a beautiful pine forest leads to the stunning Amoreira beach, the trail then continues through the hills towards Aljezur, the capital of the Vicentine coast, with its narrow streets and medieval castle.

Day 8 - Aljezur to Monte Clerigo

The Moorish castle offers a fine morning view of the small town of Aljezur and the Amoreira valley. Then, through the valleys and hills, you reach the small port and surf spot of Arrifana before the spectacular Atalaïa headland. The ruins of an ancient Sufi place of worship add a mystical touch to the natural beauty of the area. The walk ends with a visit to the small village of Monte Clerigo and its superb beach. Transfer back to Aljezur (20 mins.)

Day 9 - On the very edge of Europe to Cap Saint-Vincent

Transfer to Vila do bispo (30 mins), a barnacle fishing village. This walk takes you through wild heathlands, home to aromatic herbs, and along the multicoloured cliffs to the « promontorium sacrum » the southwestern most point in Portugal to Cape Saint-Vincent. You are on the edge of the world!

Day 10 - Along the south coast to Sagres forteress

portugal holidaysAfter a short taxi transfer (20 min) to Ingrina beach, the fishermen's paths lead along the cliffs and through multicoloured moors rich with the scent of aromatic plants, and from creeks and coves to beaches. It is possible to swim, weather permitting! The itinerary takes you to the port “da Baleeira” which as the name suggests, used to be a whaling port for hunting sperm whale.  At Sagres point, the fortress of the same name built from the 15th century, is a mecca of history and geography.  Legend has it that it was here, on the edge of an abyss, that Henry the Navigator had a vision of Portugal's maritime expansion project towards the other continents.

Day 11 - Burgau to Ponta da Piedade and Lagos

Transfer from Sagres to Burgau (30 min.). The route follows the coast, passing through the pretty village of Praia da Luz, the "beach of light", skirting cliffs (no danger), pine forests and crossing small valleys covered with aromatic plants. The ocean is omnipresent, but erosion always offers another facet of this superb South Atlantic coastline. You arrive to Ponta da Piedade, a remarkable geological site with arches, chasms, cliffs and ochre coves that form this point, once an important processional site. You end the trip in Lagos, a beautiful historic town, intimately linked to the history of sailors and pirates, forever present with the colourful trawlers who bring fish to the auction hall.  The Avenida dos Descobrimentos leads you to the sea and to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve.

. Have an extra night in Lagos by the sea and enjoy the magnificent beaches, local fish and seafood specialities. Enjoy a boat excursion and discover the Ponta da Piedade, the symbol of the region: an impressive rugged rock formation with deep sea caves.  
. Have an extra night in Faro, and explore the picturesque "cidade velha" (old town) surrounded by medieval walls that protect a gothic cathedral, an episcopal palace and pretty little cobbled streets. On Faro's doorstep are the lagoons of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and nearby beaches, including the islands of Ilha de Faro to the southwest and Ilha da Barreta to the south. You can go on a boat trip through the Rio Formosa park.
