Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Lisbon

Lisbon walk tourArrival at Lisbon airport. Transfer on your own to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you can stroll through the black and white mosaic streets of the city, take a tram or walk up to the belvedere offering a panoramic view of the capital and the Tagus estuary where you can just picture the scene from years ago with the galleons returning from Brazil, Mozambique, China.

Day 2 - Evora and the Aguas de Prata aqueduct

alentejo hike tour from evoraTrain or bus from Lisbon to Evora (1h30) : you begin your trip with a spectacular crossing of the Tagus river over the '25th April' bridge before passing through the "montado" and the cork-oak plantations that cover the landscape to Evora.  From the train station in Evora, you have a short transfer to the start of your walk. You follow the "silver water aqueduct" in the heart of the beautiful countryside. Centuries old olive trees, orange and almond trees line the gardens of the stunning Alentejo houses.  Arrive on foot in Evora inside the city walls and you are free to visit the iconic monuments : the Diane Roman Temple, the Cathedral or the bone chapel.

Day 3 - Zambujeiro and the menhir & cromlech

alentejo walk trip with dolmen and menhir in portugalShort taxi transfer to the small village of Valverde with its traditional colourful houses.  The walking path is lined with vineyards and centuries old cork-oak trees and leads you to Zambujeiro, the largest dolmen site in the Iberian Peninsula: the largest slab measures almost 8 metres! The country lanes lead to the village of Guadalupe, then a trail climbs towards the Almendres menhir and the cromlech, on a spectacular panoramic site. It is one of the most beautiful megalithic sites in all of Portugal. Return taxi transfer to Evora.
We recommend: visiting the bone chapel or the municipal gardens and the Manuelian castle dating back to the 16th century, enjoying a glass of local Alentejo wine at the enoteca Cartuxa or in Piazza Giraldo

Day 4 - Towards the Ossa convent

In a green landscape, a convent rises on the slopes of the Ossa massif. Built during the 18th century based on a 12th century shrine, the convent of Ossa conceals an exceptional heritage, including the largest private collection of azulejos in the country, consisting of 54,000 pieces. The hike (various versions: short, average and long) passes through the gardens and alongside the fountains before climbing up on a forested path towards the panoramic summit of São Gens. Through the shaded hills and valleys, you reach a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary which is one of the main places of pilgrimage in the region before regaining the convent.

Day 5 - Terena and the lake

It is a well-preserved building offering a panoramic view of the undulating plain. The flowered streets and alleys of the village lead to the medieval chapel of Senhora da Boa Nova and then the path crosses the beautiful Alentejana countryside, full of flowers and trees, to the small Terena lake. A 20 minute taxi transfer takes you to your accommodation in Monsaraz, one of the most spectacular perched and fortified villages in the country that overlooks the immense Lake Alqueva.

Day 6 - Lake Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Europe

portugal walk stay in wild alentejoThe village of Monsaraz is a real gem, with its medieval alleyways, fort and panoramic lookout points over the great Lake Alqueva, the largest artificial lake in Europe. The dam was created for irrigation and hydroelectric production on the Guadiana River, a natural border with Spain. The ancestral paths lined with cistus, rosemary and lavender lead to Lake Alqueva through a panoramic watchtower. Possibility to take a break at a sandy beach on the shores of the lake before taking the road to the Orada convent and a superb Iron Age cromlech. The ascent to Monsaraz is via a medieval paved road.

Day 7 - Back to Lisbon
