Day 2 - Walking options to Saint Paul de Vence, Tourrettes sur Loup or the Baou Blanc & Noir

best hiking trip in the back country of the french riviera

Today you have 3 walking options or you can choose to simply relax and enjoy the old town of Vence with its narrow, cobbled streets, charming  square, and al fresco dining at one of the many restaurants

- Easy walk - Starting in the historic centre of Vence, you head out of the town and enjoy a gentle stroll through the Sine woods. From here, you walk between forested path and paved road on a fairly flat terrain. The perched village of Saint Paul de Vence comes into view and you can admire a series of small chapels as you approach. You take a public bus back to Vence (bus ticket not included)
Walk - Easy - Vence > Saint Paul de Vence  - 1h10 | 4 km - 2 miles | Elevation : +100m/-240m and public bus back to Vence
- Moderate walk - The walking path to Tourettes-sur-Loup goes through the Sine woods.  Tourrettes sur Loup is labelled as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is a picturesque medieval village with beautiful houses adorned with hundreds of flowers and wide sweeping views over the valley and the hills. You can lose yourself for hours wandering the cobbled streets! You take the public bus back to Vence (ticket not included)
Walk - Moderate - Vence > Tourrettes sur Loup  - 2h30 | 8 km - 5 miles | Elevation : +320m/-280m and public bus back to Vence
- Challenging walk - A challenging hike for experienced hikers but well worth the effort as the views are outstanding  from the snow-covered peaks of the Alps to the Mediterranean. A Baou is a tall, steep hill with a flat top. There are some sections on steep rocky paths and trails and you need to feel comfortable scrambling over big rocks (not for a long time, approximately 20 min). You head  above the town of Vence and set out to conquer the famous White & Black Baous.
Walk - Challenging - Vence > Baou Blanc - Baou Noir > Vence  - 4h30 | 12 km - 7 miles | Elevation : +720m/-720m

Meals included :
breakfast
Night :
Vence

Day 3 - A walk to the Baudon mountain

Morning transfer to the perched village of Saint Agnès, Europe's highest coastal village. You drop your bag and pick up your picnic. Starting from the perched village of Sainte Agnès, it is a steady climb over the Baudon pass. For 30 minutes you take a small mountain road with a panoramic view of the sea (this small road is not very busy with cars and is mostly used by cyclists). The summit of the Cime de Baudon offers an exceptional 360° view of the whole region and the surrounding mountain peaks: a very beautiful orientation table which allows you to see as far as the summit of the Sainte Beaume and the Alps.

Walk : Sainte Agnès > Cime de Baudon > Sainte Agnès  | 4h30 | 14 km - 9 miles | Elevation : +600m/-600m
Meals included : breakfast & picnic & dinner

Night : Saint Agnès

Day 4 - Down to colourful Menton on the Med sea

menton on the med sea on the french riviera

From St Agnes you hike down to Castellar.  With its quiet streets, sole grocery store, bar and two restaurants, it is a last bastion of tranquility before arriving on the Riviera. From Castellar you find an old path winding down, and soon you've reached a set of ancient steps set directly above the old village of Menton. Menton is rightfully listed as the prettiest town on the Riviera with colourful and very well restored homes, and with rich and interesting religious architecture. The microclimate around Menton, even more mild than the rest of the French Riviera, is favorable for growing citrus fruit. The local economy these days is based around high-end tourism, but the local lemons and lemon products are still to be found (including lemoncello).
Free afternoon to discover the lovely coloured town of Menton, and to swim in the Med sea !

Walk : St Agnès > Castelar > Menton   | 4h30 | 14 km - 9 miles | Elevation : +250m/-950m
Meals included : breakfast & picnic

Night : Menton

Day 5 - The Cap Ferrat & the lovely perched village of Eze

Today, end of the trip aftter breakfast.
You have 2 walking options or you can choose to simply relax and take a break from hiking and enjoy the Med sea and the charming town of Menton. Its Italian flair, sublimated by French touches, makes this town a veritable Mediterranean jewel. From neo-classical to Italianate to "art nouveau", various palaces were built, leaving their elegant mark on Menton.

. Saint Jean Cap Ferrat
You take the train in the morning ( not included ) to Villefranche sur mer. You drop your bag at the hotel and leave by foot to explore the famous Cap Ferrat : it’s a beautiful 3 hours coastal walk. You can also add a detour and walk around the Eastern part. Train back to Menton.
Loop Walk : Saint Jean Cap Ferrat | 3h | 11 km - 7 miles | Elevation : +100m/-100m
. Detour: walk around the eastern arm of the peninsula, add one hour.
. Eze village
You take the train in the morning to Eze. The perched, medieval village of Eze sits defiantly on a rocky spur, soaring high above the coastline. Today’s walk takes you on a well-maintained path from the coastline to Eze, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The narrow cobbled roads in Eze are worth exploring, while a fabulous cactus garden sits on the very top of the village. The entrance fee for the garden is 5€; and even if you aren’t a fan of succulents, the 360 degree views from the top are alone worth the entrance price. Train back to Menton.
Walk : Eze village out and back | 2h30 | Elevation : +400m/-400m
